Vicente Gonzalez is projected to win the Democratic nomination in the District 34 congressional race, according to the Associated Press.
Gonzalez beat six Democratic challengers to win his party's nomination, according to unofficial election results. Gonzalez said while it will be a tough election, he expects Democrats to remember which party, he says, has lifted the Valley economically.
"Latinos in South Texas have entered the middle class because of the policies that have been in place because of the Democrats," Gonzalez said. "I, for example, went to college and law school because of student loans and pell grants. I would not have been able to do without it; those are Democratic programs."
Gonzalez will face Mayra Flores, the Republican nominee for District 34, in November. Flores beat three other candidates to win her party's nomination, according to unofficial election results.
"I want to be a voice for all people," Flores said. "It doesn't matter if you're a Democrat or a Republican, at the end of the day, we all want more opportunities. We all want more money in our pockets."
