'Everything started floating away:' Volunteers cleaning up Sullivan City cemetery damaged by storm
Graves are sunken in, and mementos from family members are toppled over at the Cuevitas Cemetery south of Sullivan City.
The cemetery was hit hard by last week’s storm, with the water damaging dozens of grave sites.
“The cemetery was underwater,” Elisa Soliz said. “Everything started floating away and dirt started sinking in, it's devastating.”
Soliz and other community members have been at the cemetery almost every day cleaning up from the storm. They've been using social media to let people know about damage from the floods, and connect with relatives who live elsewhere.
The cemetery was started in 1915, and it's the final resting place for several of Soliz's relatives.
It's why she's dedicated so much of her time to taking care of it before the floods, and especially now.
“I don't want to, but someday I’ll be buried here,” Soliz said.
The cemetery isn't taken care of by the city or Hidalgo County. It’s up to residents to take care of it.
“It belongs to our community, and we the people have always taken care of it," Soliz said.
