Harlingen city officials are getting behind a plan to host a semi-pro soccer team.

Officials want to turn Harlingen Field into a soccer pitch, since the historic park has everything needed. The city pays upkeep, but this place isn't getting regularly used.

The buildings at the park go back to 1950.

Harlingen Field was home to several baseball teams throughout the years, including the Harlingen Whitewings.

A group spoke to the Harlingen mayor and commissioners in early December and got their support to host the soccer team, that is part of a 3rd division U.S. soccer league.

The group will be allowed to the park and city staff are working on restoring and maintaining some of the fixtures that need work.

"The city of Harlingen is excited. I think it's going to be something great for families and youth," City of Harlingen Assistant Parks Director Juan Mediola III said. "The minimal requirements on our end isn't a great impact on ourselves. So we're going to work on their locker rooms, the facility itself, the field."

RGV Pro Soccer Project Organizer Colby Fayyad said an announcement is coming soon.

"They are helping by providing this field and the pitch on the soccer field. So they've been a huge help so far," Fayyad said.

They're working on plans to cover finance and expenses. Now they're seeking coaches and planning to recruit players from local high schools.

Part of the work by the city will be to reset the field, smooth it out, take out the lumps that are the mark of a baseball field and turn it into a soccer venue.
