WESLACO – Homeowners in the Rio Grande Valley are being warned about letters being sent in regards to property ownership. 

Letters are being sent out from a company called ‘Homestead Recording Service’ that asks homeowners to send money to prove they are the owners of their property.

The letter claims to be a ‘designation of homestead request form’.

"It's kind of confusing to begin with because. I think every time I get a tax bill for this house it indicates that somebody already know this is my homestead,” explains property owner Max Matthews.

KRGV’s Angelo Vargas spoke with an attorney about the matter.

Real estate attorney Pete Diaz says this form is not necessary. He says many people associate a homestead as a tax exemption but designating a homestead is different.
