A suspect accused of being hired to kill his boss’ wife in Brownsville pleaded guilty to a murder charge Tuesday, court records show.

Jonathan Xavier Roman Martinez was originally on trial on charges of capital murder while remuneration and burglary of habitation with intent to commit other felony in connection with the November 2020 murder of 39-year-old Adela Gonzalez Martinez.

Court records indicate Jonathan pleaded guilty to the lesser offense of murder in exchange for a 50-year prison sentence.

Adela Martinez’s body was discovered by Brownsville police officers in her apartment as they responded to a welfare concern there. 

Jonathan’s trial started on Nov 13, and prosecutors said he fatally shot Adela after her ex-husband — Jose “Pepe” Arnoldo Martinez — hired him to kill her.

Prosecutors said Jose hired Jonathan Martinez and one other man — Charly Carrillo Torres — to kill Adela in exchange for a truck and money. Prosecutors also said Jose wanted Adela dead because of the tens of thousands of dollars he owed her in child support.

Torres previous pleaded guilty to a charge of burglary of habitation with intent to commit other felony. As part of his plea deal, Torres agreed to testify against his co-defendants.
