The UTRGV Vaqueros baseball team picked up the win in the first game of their series against Stephen F. Austin on Friday night. The team picks up the win 7-2 in their first home game since March 23rd.

At this point last year, the Vaqueros baseball team was 8-9 in conference play without their ace Angelo Cabral. Today they were 13-5 going into the game and Angelo Cabral on the mound with a 3-0 record so far on the year. He came out on top today again, improving to 4-0 in six innings of work while striking out five.

“Cabral had a good start and Jack [Lopez] did a good job out of the bullpen,” Vaqueros head coach Derek Matlock said. “A win is a win, but we have to play them one inning at a time and we’ll have our hands full tomorrow.”

UTRGV first baseman Jacob Sanchez finished with a team-high three hits on the night as well as two runs scored in the victory.

“We just stayed simple,” Sanchez said. “On the way back from Northwestern [State], coach said we just need to stay simple and single this guy out cause he was a good pitcher so we had to grind him out and put up runs.”

The second game of the series is tomorrow night at 6:30 p.m. in Edinburg. Action will conclude on Sunday as usual for UTRGV with a 12:00 p.m. start in the season finale.
