Tides were two feet above normal on Wednesday afternoon in South Padre Island as the effects of Tropical Storm Alberto made its way through the Rio Grande Valley.

The high tide was starting to eat away sand from some dunes, and it’ll continue that way with more stormy weather heading this way.

Those who visited the island on Wednesday didn't stay in the water for long, and city officials want people to stay out completely while the tide is high. 

"The water is up to the dunes right now, so it's definitely not safe to be out on the beaches currently,” SPI Fire Chief Jim Pigg said. "We want to make sure that if we do have evacuation later this summer, that we coordinate that and get everybody out as safely as possible."
