LA FERIA – Reyes Rodriguez loves to compete. He likes setting goals and reaching them. The soon-to-be graduate is leaving quite a mark at La Feria High School athletically and academically.

Reyes picked up running in middle school and later as a sophomore, he qualified for the UIL state meet.

As a junior, he took 2nd place.

“Expectations were higher since I got second,” said Rodriguez. “I just wanted to prove to myself and everyone that I can be one of the best. That really motivated me. Out in practice, I’d go even harder.”

This year, Rodriguez captured gold, taking 1st place in the class 4A 800 meter run by less than a second.

“It’s honestly one of the best feelings I felt,” said Rodriguez. “It’s honestly a dream come true, seeing all the hard work pay off.”

“He comes out to practice and he runs a five-minute mile just to warm up,” said La Feria track coach Everardo Sanchez. “He runs his races and he doesn’t lose, even in practice.”

That competitive edge carries over into the classroom. Reyes will graduate in the top ten of his class.

“My family likes to push me,” said Rodriguez. “We’re very competitive at the house. My dad’s the principal. Got to look good for him and look good for myself. I like to win.”

Reyes will run for Texas A&M-Kingsville on the collegiate level. After college, he plans on working in the medical field.

He’s already ahead of the game.

“I’ve been taking medical courses here at the high school,” said Rodriguez. “I also took a CMA class…night school. I already got certifications.”

Although Rodriguez had interest from several Division I programs, he chose to go to school in Kingsville because of its proximity.
