La Joya ISD police chief: School bus driver suffers medical condition, crashes into school property with students onboard
A school bus driver who suffered a medical condition while students were onboard crashed into school property on Thursday and was later pronounced dead at a local hospital, according to the La Joya Independent School District police chief.
No students were injured in the incident.
The 60-year-old bus driver was transporting students from Juarez Lincoln High School when he suffered a “medical condition” behind the wheel at 4:45 p.m. according to La Joya ISD police Chief Raul Gonzalez. The medical condition caused the bus to crash through the fence of the district’s transportation station, located on 7415 7-Mile Line and Western road north of La Joya.
One of the 19 students onboard was able to stop the bus, Gonzalez said.
District personnel performed CPR on the driver until an ambulance arrived to transport him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The driver, whose identity hasn’t been released, worked in the district for eight years, Gonzalez said.
Additional counselors will be available for students and staff at the campus Friday, Gonzalez said.
An autopsy was ordered, Gonzalez added.
