One local bakery is struggling to keep prices down despite the high cost of a key ingredient: eggs.

Maria Elena Lopez runs El Manjar Bakery in Alamo with the help of her family. They've been in business for almost 14 years, and Maria Elena Lopez’s son says it’s been tough to maintain their prices when the cost of eggs is so high.

“It's very challenging right because that's one of our main ingredients in our products,” Roberto Lopez said.

Government data shows the price of eggs went up 49% last year, more than any other grocery item.

Before inflation, the bakery was paying anywhere between $18 and $25 for 15 dozen eggs. That price has since doubled.

"It's tough because we can't be changing prices on a daily basis,” Roberto Lopez said. “We get prices one day, the box is $40. One day it's $60. The people that provide the eggs to us, they're telling us $80 a box."

Roberto Lopez said the bakery was forced to raise prices by 14% percent to offset the cost a few months ago. They're considering doing it again.

“Pretty soon we'll be losing money,” Maria Elena Lopez said. “We can't keep doing this—waiting because we thought prices would go back down."
