Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño gave a COVID-19 update Monday morning.

Cameron County officials continue to encourage people to get vaccinated against COVID-19, including booster shots. Officials say despite the drop in positive infections, the holidays could be a prime time to set up another spike.

Although more than 70% of the county is fully vaccinated against the coronavirus, authorities say they want to make sure people take proper precautions.

Experts say the best way to stay protected is for all adults to have a high level of immunity since many children won't be fully vaccinated against the virus by the holidays.

"Are we going to get future waves?" Cameron County Health Authority Dr. James Castillo said. "The answer looks like COVID is not going away."

Castillo says to reach herd immunity, more than 90% of the population needs to be actively immune against COVID-19. But he says it's unrealistic to expect that to happen since children under five do not qualify for the vaccine, and many people still refuse the shot.

Cameron County continues to offer a $50 incentive Visa card for all adults, including students who get vaccinated against the coronavirus. The incentive program will run until the end of December.
