Cyberattack attempts are happening everywhere, and a new cybersecurity center aims to prevent them.

On Thursday, UTRGV and the Texas Department of Information Resources unveiled the newest Regional Security Operations Center in Edinburg.

The center will keep an eye on internet traffic, and offer to help local governments and cities boost surveillance in the region.

“School districts can't afford it. Small municipal governments just can't afford the hundreds of thousands of dollars a year that it costs just to buy the tools, let alone the staff,” UTRGV Chief Information Security Officer Kevin Crouse said.

This investment starts with $5.5 million from the state and the UT System. Students will be able to learn there, and the center will help local governments in 28 South Texas counties with surveillance.

“There's no other state that's taken a statewide approach to this…. but what's different and unique about it is most state agencies don't have the resources, or haven't made the resources available,” Crouse said.

UTRGV's new cybersecurity center is under the state's Department of Information Resources. It's the second cybersecurity center in Texas, and a third center is opening at UT Austin.

“We'll be 24 hours, 7 days a week, monitoring network traffic, monitoring for incidents, monitoring for compromises, responding to security events,” Crouse said.
