Rush hour in Rio Grande City makes Highway 83 feel congested, and the addition of commercial trucks make it worse for several drivers.
Highway 83 is the main route through Rio Grande City. The city is hoping to give big rigs a straight shot to the new relief route north of town.
The relief route is a Texas Department of Transportation project.
While that's being built, the city plans to use $4 million of state and federal funds to help build the connecting road.
Work on TxDOT's relief route is expected to begin summer 2025.
