Staying safe while shopping online during Cyber Monday
Shoppers are getting ready to take advantage of some of the holiday deals being offered online for Cyber Monday, but tech-savvy cybercriminals are determined to cash in on those unsuspecting shoppers with scams.
Experts say you need to be careful on the internet, as popular social media apps like TikTok now are now making it easier to buy from their online store.
Experts say you should stick to your holiday shopping with reputable retailers, and only buy from a secure website to avoid scams.
Also make sure to protect your accounts with a strong password so a cybercriminal doesn't steal your information.
When shopping online use a credit card instead of a debit card, as there are laws that limit your liability for fake credit card charges.
Check for fraud after your holiday shopping, and keep an eye on your transactions to make sure the amounts are correct.
"There are many scammers who are using the fake URL, and all they want is just your personal information," Better Business Bureau of South Texas President Hilda Martinez said. "Also, look at where the company is from. Many online companies are from outside the country, look where they are from and ask 'if I buy merchandise and don't like it, what are their policies if you want to return something?'"
Experts say you should also always check the reviews on the website. If you don't see any pictures or descriptions of the product, it is very likely it is coming from another country.
Make sure you report any kind of fraud right away, as federal law offers plenty of protections for fake transactions.
Reporting it quickly will allow your credit card company to investigate more effectively.
