A San Benito family is determined to move forward after losing their home in a Saturday fire.

Cassandra Tamayo said she grew up in this home, and her brother, sister, and parents still live there.

“It holds a lot of sentimental value for us, so to see it destroyed breaks our hearts,” Tamayo said.

San Benito Fire Chief Efrain Bautista said the fire started in a shed that was in the backyard that spread to the roof of the home.

The parts of the home that weren't destroyed received smoke damage.

“It's devastating because of all the memories that we have in this home,” Tamayo said. “We've laughed, we've cried, we've prayed, we've fought in this home."

Tamayo’s aunt, Maria Monjaraz, also grew up in the home. She said coming back to see the damage brought her to tears.

“This is not just a home, it's more than that to everybody — my nephews, myself and my daughters,” Monjaraz said.

Tamayo said she and her family were able to save some photos — including those of her grandparents.

“They're not with us right now, so it was really, really important for us to grab those pictures,” Tamayo said.

As the family works to save old memories, they’re creating new ones.

The community that surrounded this home for 30 years is helping the family with clothing and food donations.

“People that we don't even know they're being helpful,” Tamayo said. “During the fire, our neighbors had their fire houses connected trying to put the fire out."

The family is staying with other relatives until they're able to rebuild.

A GoFundMe page was set up to help the family rebuild. Click here to donate.
