RIO HONDO – The Department of Public Safety increased a reward for information leading to an arrest on a 15-year-old's murder in 1988.

Michael Flores was shot as he sat inside his bedroom at his home on the 200 block of Forrest Street. It will be 29 years since his death on Aug. 26. 

Flores’ mother, Maria Helena Flores, told CHANNEL 5 NEWS Michael had just got home watching the high school marching band practice when he went into his room.

A few minutes later, a gunshot is heard. His mother said he was hit in the head.

Authorities said the bullet that killed the teen came from outside the family’s home.

The family said in spite of the amount of time that has passed, they are still hopeful someone will come forward and provide new information.

“I do think the ones that saw something, heard something might have been afraid to talk. Their parents might not have wanted them to talk, say anything to get involved. They might have thought that what they knew was some little thing that might not be important, but every little thing is important in trying to solve a case,” said Maria Flores.

Michael Flores’ family said the gun used in his murder was never found. The Texas Rangers are the lead agency in the investigation.

On Tuesday, DPS increased the reward to $6,000. The agency said the reward only applies if the tip is received before next month’s featured case is announced.
