SOUTH PADRE ISLAND – The Queen Isabella Memorial Causeway has reopened. TxDOT officials made the announcement on Twitter.

According to the South Padre Island police chief, a phone call led to the shutdown.

South Padre Island Police Chief Randy Smith said they received a phone call from a woman Friday morning.

“Someone called and said the bridge may collapse. We asked them, ‘What do you mean?’ And they hung up,” he said.

Authorities responded to the scene and set a precautionary closure of the causeway. It was reopened around 2:00 p.m.

“There’s nothing of major concern, but of course we are taking all preliminary precautions just to be sure,” Port Isabel Fire Marshal John Sandoval said.

Engineers with the Texas Department of Transportation inspected the bridge to make sure it was secure.

“We take every concern and every threat very seriously. This is for the safety and well-being of the general public. We want to make sure. I know it’s sometimes a hassle. At the same rate we want to make sure that our citizens are safe,” Sandoval said.

TxDOT spokesman Octavio Saenz said the alarm system on the causeway never went off to indicate there was any damage.

In a press release, TxDOT officials stated, "There is no indication of visual or structural damage and that the collapse detection system (a fiber optic system that activates through the use of sensors of any offset in integrity) has not alerted of any issues."

TxDOT officials said the causeway was inspected two weeks ago.

DPS Said they now know who made the call, and they don’t believe it was an intended threat or hoax. Authorities are still looking into the case.
