BROWNSVILLE – An architecture instructor at Texas Southmost College says his curriculum goes beyond the basics.

Francisco Perez studied architecture in the STEM program at Veterans Memorial High School.

“I got used to doing architecture for a while. Just going on the computer doing the floor plans, everything, and I liked it,” he tells CHANNEL 5 NEWS. “I saw that TSC offered architecture as well here, so I just brought what I knew and then just kept studying over here at TSC.”

Perez says even though the work is similar, the workload increased. He says he’s learned to manage his time, especially when all his classes schedule a project around the same time.

Murad Abusalin, an architecture instructor at TSC, says he wants students to realize the little details matter.

“You have to have a broader skill set, communications skills, soft skills, writing skills, in addition to drawings and creative skills,” he says.

He says the rigorous curriculum is designed to prepare students to the real world of architecture.

“We often tell our students as an architect, you really have to wear different hats throughout your career and throughout the day,” he says.
