SOUTH PADRE ISLAND – On South Padre Island, Padre Boulevard is closed to all traffic due to severe damage to 31 transmission poles along the road from overnight storms.

"We need people to understand that Padre Blvd is closed due to safety purposes these lines are potentially still hot," said Mayor Patrick McNulty.

The mayor said AEP will have to replace transmission lines.

Nikki Soto, the city's public information officer, says drivers and pedestrians will be able to navigate through Laguna and Gulf boulevards around the island.

Soto added the contraflow lanes along Padre Blvd are expected to be opened Wednesday.

Drivers should expect traffic delays throughout the city.

City officials believe the main road should be completely open by Saturday.

As of 6:30 p.m. Monday, AEP says they've restored power to 7,000 customers, leaving 4,300 still without power. They added power is expected to be restored to most of their customers by 9 p.m. Monday.
