Peñitas residents on edge following police chase that ends in officer-involved shooting
Residents in a Peñitas neighborhood say they’re on edge after a high speed chase ended in an officer-involved shooting outside their homes.
“There's families over here, not just us, I have kids,” Peñitas resident Christian Martinez said. “We were just getting ready to go out, and couldn't get out cause there was a lot of cars.”
Within minutes, Martinez’s neighborhood was filled with several local, state and federal law enforcement agencies after one man who led authorities on a multi-city chase.

Officers with the Weslaco Police Department responded to the Primrose Village Apartment at the 2615 block of East Sugarcane Drive at around 9 a.m. Tuesday morning in reference to a man with a gunshot wound.
“Once officers arrived they found that it was a domestic dispute, in which the suspect pointed the handgun at his girlfriend, and discharged into the ceiling” Weslaco police Chief Joel Rivera said. “Prior to our arrival, the suspect fled the scene.”
The apartment complex was right next to the IDEA Weslaco campus. Which was placed on lockdown as a precaution while police searched for the suspect.
The suspect returned to the scene at around 10:20 a.m. and led police on the chase that ended on military road east of Garza Avenue in Peñitas 30 miles away.
“Texas DPS pitted him and ended up shooting the suspect,” Rivera said.
Police said the unidentified 40-year-old suspect was shot in the arm and hospitalized, adding he’s a known gang member.
Although the suspect was the only one injured in the chase, neighbors are worried how quickly a normal day can change.
“I get worried,” Martinez said. “A tragedy, an accident, can happen at any time."
The Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting.
