MCALLEN – A group of men meet every week to tune up their vocal chords and get ready to perform. Some of them have been doing it for almost 50 years.

The group calls themselves Men of A-Chord and there are about 60 members.

“I’ve been in barbershop for 46 years now,” Dennis Bush, the president of the group, said. “This society has been around for 65 years now and there are chapters all over the country.”

Jerry Boman, the vice president of the group, said they only sing a cappella.

“Four-part harmony and it just blends in so nice. And when we hit certain chords, it just makes you smile,” he said.

The men practice and practice until the tune sounds just right.

“When you ring a-chord you hear a pitch above the tenor that falls into place,” Bush said. “And when you get that chord to ring, it’s really an exciting thing for a singer.”

And after all the work they put in, they do put on concerts.

“Many, many RV parks in the Valley, as you know, and that’s our audience,” Boman said.

The a cappella group performs at RV parks and churches. On Feb. 18 they will hold a joint concert with the Sweet Adelines, their female counterparts, at PSJA High School.

There is no age limit for people who want to join. The oldest member is 94.

Barbershop harmony is considered an art form. The Men of A-Chord surely showcase that.
