High Schoolers Embrace Valley Tradition in Conjunto Competition
BROWNSVILLE – To celebrate the most traditional music of the Rio Grande Valley, Brownsville held their second annual conjunto competition.
The competition is between seven high schools and one elementary school.
“We’re good friends with many of the directors at the schools and we asked them about competition because there’s no music, there’s no UIL competition,” says Timo Ruedas, one of the event coordinators.
A panel of judges looks at the students’ music arrangement, technique and overall group performance.
“Basically it’s to keep the students engaged in our culture,” says Ruedas.
