City of Mission gives away turkeys to families in need
More than 450 families in Mission received turkeys with all the fixings on Friday.
Mission Mayor Norie Gonzalez Garza said the families were picked based on economic need.
A Hidalgo County Community Services Agency spokesperson said 37 percent of people live below poverty; that's twice the state average.
"It's a known fact, our city, our county is one of the lowest income areas in the United States and Texas. Asking for federal help is always on our radar," Garza said.
Anyone in need of help to make ends meet, can contact the Hidalgo County Community Services Agency for information on what they qualify for.
