WESLACO –A former Hidalgo County sheriff serving a sentence for money laundering was released early from federal prison.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS confirmed Lupe Trevino was released from the federal prison camp in Pensacola, Florida on Wednesday.  

He’s now at a residential re-entry center or halfway house, where he will continue serving his five-year sentence.

We’re told the specific location of the facility isn’t being disclosed due to privacy reasons.

Trevino is expected to be released from custody early next year.
