Flores looking to retain District 34 seat against Gonzalez
Republican incumbent Mayra Flores is looking to keep her position as the District 34 representative as she faces longtime District 15 Congressional Democratic Congressman Vicente Gonzalez.
Flores won the District 34 seat following a special election to replace Congressman Filemon Vela, who retired before his term ended.
Gonzalez currently holds the District 15 seat, but he opted to run in District 34 after redistricting.
Flores declined to interview for this story, but she is looking to gain the backing of voters in South Texas by standing firm on immigration.
Gonzalez says he backs a safe and legal process for migrants seeking asylum and introduced a bill that allows people to apply for asylum in their home country.
According to Flores' website, she is pro-life, backs the Second Amendment, law enforcement veterans and the oil and gas industry and advocates for farmers in the Valley.
Gonzalez says, if elected, he will continue to invest in the area like he did while serving in the neighboring District 15.
