A family is seeking answers after what started out as a missing person's report in Alton turned into a homicide investigation.

The decomposed body of 45-year-old Alan Israel Sanchez Herrera was found on July 12 at a residence at the 1800 block of East Juarez Avenue in Alton.

Herrera was first reported missing on July 4.

The cause of death was ruled a homicide.

“I can't believe someone would do something like this to him,” a man identified as a cousin of Herrera told Channel 5 News. “I hope that they pay for what they did because it's not fair. Because he was good and helped out everyone."

The Alton Police Department continues investigating the homicide, but so far no arrests have been made.

“We have been working diligently with our investigators, and also with our major crimes division, with the [Hidalgo County] Sheriff's Office who has been a big support for this case, “Alton police Sgt. Ruben Lozano said.

Herrera’s family says they are hoping someone will come forward to keep Herrera’s memory alive.

“We want to give a reward of $1,000 for someone who can tell us what happened to my cousin,” Herrera’s relative said.

Those with any information in the investigation are urged to contact the Alton Police Department at 956-432-0700.
