A Cameron County detention officer is behind bars on multiple charges of oppression and civil rights violations.
Jose Alberto Rivas, 34, was arrested Wednesday after a tip from an inmate prompted an investigation into his behavior at the Carrizales Rucker Detention Center, according to a news release from the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office.
Rivas was arrested on two charges of improper sexual activity with an inmate in custody and two additional charges of request for sexual favors of an inmate after “sufficient evidence was collected” following the investigation, the news release stated.
Rivas, a former staff jail sergeant at the detention center, was terminated from his position.
