A police officer who was shot in the line of duty Wednesday night has been released from the hospital, according to a news release from the Brownsville Police Department. 

The shooting happened at the 0 block Coahuila Court at around 10:02 p.m. Wednesday when the officer responded to a report of a door left open at a residence.

According to the news release, homeowners shot at officers when they arrived.

One of the officers was shot in the chest.

The officer was taken to the hospital but is expected to recover. Police say the protective gear the officer was wearing helped saved his life.

Police haven't released the identity of the person who shot the police officer, but say the homeowner is cooperating with the investigation.
