PENITAS – A Hidalgo County woman says they’re planning an outdoor fire to keep warm during the extreme cold.

Penitas resident Julia Tamez says in addition, she and her family will be layered in clothing and blankets Wednesday night.

KRGV’s Frank McCaffrey reached out to Edinburg Fire Chief Shawn Snider for tips on how they can remain safe.

“The best thing is, if you’re going to open fire, it needs to be completely away from the structure,” he explains. “You need to make sure that all the clothing and wrapping and blankets that you have, that you don’t get too close to the fire because it can catch that material on fire.”

The Edinburg Health and Wellness Facility will be open on Tuesday from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. on Wednesday.

It is recommended to bring food, medication and bedding. The shelter is located at 315 East Palm Dr. in Edinburg.
