Weslaco police: Aggravated robbery suspect dies in standoff with Cameron County authorities

Police say a man accused of robbing a store in Weslaco Sunday afternoon later led authorities on a high-speed chase through Cameron County before he was shot during a standoff with authorities in San Benito.
The man, who has not been identified, was struck by gunfire and died from his injuries, according to a news release from the Weslaco Police Department and Cameron County Sheriff Eric Garza.
Weslaco police say at about 12:58 p.m., officers responded to the Cricket Wireless store located at 515 East Interstate Highway 2 regarding an aggravated robbery.
Officers say a cashier had been tied up and robbed at gunpoint by a man wearing a black shirt and beige shorts, who fled minutes before the call for service was made.
The man took cash from the store and the victim's 2011 Red Dodge Charger, according to police.
While processing the scene, Weslaco police learned that Cameron County Constable Precinct 5 was chasing a vehicle and shots were being fired at authorities from the driver.
The Cameron County Sheriff's Office and San Benito police were also involved in the chase, which ended at FM2520 and Ricardo Avenue in San Benito.
Weslaco police later confirmed that the vehicle and driver were linked to the aggravated robbery in Weslaco.
"Weslaco Police learned the suspect, was in a standoff with law enforcement where shots were fire[d], and the suspect was struck by gunfire and passed away," Weslaco police said in a statement.
The Texas Rangers are assisting with the investigation, according to Cameron County Sheriff Eric Garza.
