Valley cities handing out sandbags ahead of potentially heavy rain

With potentially heavy rain in the forecast this week, multiple cities are helping residents prepare by distributing sandbags.

This list will be updated as we learn of more sandbag distribution events.

CAMERON COUNTY

Sandbags will be distributed at the following locations:

- Commissioner Precinct 1 Warehouse, located 2050 S. Browne Ave. in Brownsville
- Commissioner Precinct 2 Warehouse, located at 7092 Old Alice Road in Brownsville
- Commissioner Precinct 3 Warehouse, located at 26945 FM 510 in San Benito
- Commissioner Precinct 4 Warehouse, located at 26623 White Ranch Road in La Feria

Residents may pick up six sandbags per household on Monday, June 17, from 2 p.m. through 8 p.m., or until sandbags run out.

BROWNSVILLE

The city will be distributing sandbags on Tuesday, June 18 from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the following locations:

- 298 McNair Family Drive (formerly E. Fronton)
- Public Works Office Building C, Jaime J. Zapata Ave.

Sandbags will be available while supplies last. Residents will receive up to six sandbags per family and per commercial business. Bring a utility bill to be eligible to receive sandbags.

HARLINGEN

The city will be distributing sandbags on Monday, June 17 from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Harlingen Public Works Yard, located at 404 S. 54th St., according to a news release.

Residents must bring their Harlingen Water Works System water bill and their driver's license to receive six sandbags.

Business owners must bring their water bill to receive 10 sandbags.

Elderly residents who cannot pick up sandbags themselves can call 956-216-5300 for delivery arrangements.

RANCHO VIEJO

A self-serve sandbag distribution site will open on Monday, June 17 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Rancho Viejo Town Hall, located at 3301 Carmen Ave., according to a news release.

Shovels and an ID or utility bill will be required. Only eight sandbags per household will be provided.

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND

Sandbags will be available on Tuesday, June 18, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the city's Public Works Workshop building, located at the corner of West Venus and Laguna Boulevard.

Residents and businesses will need to bring shovels and fill the bags provided to them. Residents are allowed five bags per property. Businesses will be allowed 10 bags per property.

HIDALGO COUNTY

Hidalgo County precincts 1, 2, 3 and 4 will hand out sandbags on Tuesday, June 18 at the following locations:

PRECINCT 4

M. Road Recovery Center
1124 N. "M" Road in Edinburg
7:30 a.m. - 6 p.m.

Self-serve distribution site. Bags and sand must be provided. Shovels, gloves and proof of Precinct 4 residency and business in rural county area required. Sandbags available to those over the age of 65 with a disability.

ALAMO

A self-serve sandbag distribution site is open to residents in the city of Alamo, according to a news release.

Residents with a utility bill or other forms of proof of residency must go to Alamo City Hall, located at 420 N. Tower Rd.

Residents under the age of 60 and without disabilities will be given sandbags and will be directed to the following locations to fill in their sandbags:

- Alamo Sports Complex
Located at 600 E Ridge Rd.

- Balli Park
Located at 804 E Nebraska Rd.

- Alaniz Park,
Located on the corner of 6th and Citrus between Duranta.

Residents over the age of 60 and those with disabilities can pick up a purple voucher at Alamo City Hall, and they will be directed to Alamo Public Works, located at 803 S. Tower Rd., where sandbags will be provided.

Residents will be limited to five bags per resident, and two bags per business.

ALTON

A distribution site in the city of Alton will open on Monday, June 17 at 10 a.m., according to a news release.

The distribution site for Alton residents is in the northwest side of the Sylvia Vela Park, located at 510 S Alton Blvd. Shovels and bags will be available at the self-serve site.

Elderly and disabled residents in need of assistance can contact Alton City Hall at 956-432-0760 or the city's public works department at 956-432-0792.

EDINBURG

The city of Edinburg will give out sandbags to residents on Tuesday, June 18, according to a news release.

The sandbags will be given out to residents at the Edinburg Service Center, located at 1201 N. Doolittle Rd., from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

An ID and a utility bill is required for proof of residence, and those attending will be allowed six sandbags per household, and eight bags per business.

Those bringing their own bags can take an unlimited amount of sand.

A self-service sandbag distribution location will also open on Tuesday, June 18, at the Edinburg Municipal Park, located on 714 S. Raul Longoria Rd., from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.

You must live within city limits. Six bags per household and eight bags for businesses.

PHARR

Sandbags will be provided to residents on Tuesday, June 18, at the following locations:

- Pharr EMS
Located at 3000 N. Cage Blvd

- Pharr Development & Research Center
Located at 850 W. Dicker Rd.

According to a news release, the sandbag distribution sites will be open from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Proof of residency, such as a water bill or a driver's license, is required. Residents will be provided with six sandbags per residence and 12 sandbags per business.

You can also call the city's public works office at 956-402-4350 to request sandbag delivery.

McALLEN

A self-serve sandbag distribution site will be open Monday, June 17, through Wednesday, June 19 at the city of McAllen Recycling Center, located at 4101 N. Bentsen Rd., according to a news release.

The site will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on those three days.

Proof of residency, such as a utility bill, must be provided.

Sandbags are limited to six per resident and 12 per business.

Bags and shovels will be provided, but residents are asked to bring your own shovel for faster service.

MISSION

Two self-serve sandbag distribution sites in the city of mission will be open on Monday, June 17, and Tuesday, June 18, according to a news release.

The sites will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on both days at the following locations:

- Speer Memorial Library
Located at 1106 N. Shary Rd.

- Sharyland High School Castleman Gym
Located at 1822 N. Shary Rd.

You must live within the Mission City limits and bring your ID or utility bill as a proof of residency.

Bags and shovels will be available. Residents can take six bags per household and 10 bags per business.

PALMHURST

A sandbag distribution event is set for Monday, June 17 and Tuesday, June 18, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Faith Baptist Church — located at 4301 N. Shary Rd.

Proof of residency is required, and people are allowed to take six sandbags for residence, or eight bags per business, according to a news release.

SAN JUAN

Sandbags will be issued on Tuesday, June 18 starting at 9 a.m. until supplies run out at the following locations:

- Old Recycling Center, located at 323 W 1st. St.
- Mayfield Park, located at 1419. S San Antonio Ave.

Residents must show proof of residency, including a valid ID or a current utility bill, according to a news release. Sandbag distribution will be limited to six sandbags per resident and 10 for business.

A second round of sandbag distributions will be held at the Old Recycling Center at 1:30 p.m. until supplies last.

WESLACO

Sandbags are available at Weslaco City Hall, located at 255 S. Kansas Ave., on Monday, June 17 through Friday, June 21, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., according to a news release.

Shovels and proof of residency are required.

STARR COUNTY

LA GRULLA

A self-serve sandbag distribution site will open on Tuesday, June 18 at 8:30 a.m. at the La Grulla Fire Department, located on 268 FM360, according to a news release.

A shovel and water bill is required. Those at the site will only be allowed to take five bags per family.

RIO GRANDE CITY

Sandbags will be distributed on Monday, June 17, and Tuesday, June 18 at 632 W. Eisenhower Rd., according to a news release.

Sandbags will be distributed on both days from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Proof of residency, and a shovel, is required.

Residents will be allowed five sandbags per household and 10 sandbags per business.

ROMA

The City of Roma Emergency Management Committee will hand out sandbags at the Community Center, located at 677-845 6th St., on Tuesday, June 18 from 4 p.m. through 7 p.m.

Please bring your own shovel.

WILLACY COUNTY

RAYMONDVILLE

City crews will be distributing sandbags at Raymondville City Hall, located at 142 S. 7th St., on Monday, June 17 starting at 9 a.m., according to a news release.

Residents will be allowed six bags per household and 10 bags per business. Shovels and proof of residency and business is required.
