EDINBURG – Many are unaware the Rio Grande Valley played an important role during the American Civil War.
An exhibit called “The Rio Grande Valley Civil War Trail” details more than 60 sites and events that took place in the Valley during the war; as well as a list of soldiers from the area.
“This was as much a Civil War here as it was in Kentucky or any other place. We had cousins fighting cousins. People that had one relative serving the Union versus another in the Confederate forces,” said Russell Skowronek, an associate dean at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
The exhibit is at the visitor’s center at UTRGV in Edinburg and it will run until the middle of June.
