BROWNSVILLE - A former Brownsville kickball coach is back in jail after she violated orders not to communicate with a teenage girl she’s accused of kidnapping.
Brownsville police said U.S. Marshals arrested 30-year-old Claudia Guerra Wednesday on charges of violating her bond conditions.
Guerra is accused of taking a 14-year-old teen into Mexico for almost an entire day in September. She paid bond and was let go after her arrest for aggravated kidnapping.
The teen’s family said no one was allowed in the courtroom during Guerra’s arraignment on Thursday.
Priscilla Sanchez, the teen’s aunt, said Guerra shouldn’t be given the opportunity to be back out on the streets this time.
“She’s going to do it again. She obviously didn’t listen the first time,” she said. “The past few months have been very hard for us, and I thought this was going to put a stop.”
Brownsville Police Department investigator J.J. Trevino said they discovered new evidence that showed Guerra was still communicating with the teen.
“Apparently, she had been having contact with the victim. She had been texting and having phone calls with her,” he said.
Police said evidence led them to conclude Guerra may have even met up with the girl. However, it’s unclear how often she may have done it.
Michael Trejo, Guerra’s attorney, did not discuss details on camera. However, he did speak to us briefly following the arraignment.
“I’m not going to talk about my client other than to say she’s not guilty, and she’s waiting for her day in court,” he said.
Sanchez said she wished the judge would’ve kept her behind bars. She also argued Guerra’s bond was set too low.
“It’s really sad they’re going to let her out again. This is not only affecting our family, but it could affect other families as well,” she said. “Obviously, she’s a danger to the community and it’s not good.”
The Cameron County District Attorney’s Office requested a no bond for Guerra. Brownsville Municipal judge Valerie Garcia denied the request and set her bond at $250,000.
Sanchez said the family encouraged the teen to play sports and stay active to help her get through this.
Trejo said the bond is excessive and will request a bond reduction.
