The home of a San Juan family was destroyed in an early Saturday morning fire.

While Paola Hernandez and the rest of her family weren’t at home at the time, their pets were — one of whom died in the fire.

“I don’t even want to look at my house, it’s a disaster,” Hernandez said. “I can’t do anything. All the sacrifices we made and in an instant, it was consumed.”

The family says the entire roof of their home — located on the 420 block of Rio Nueces Street — collapsed due to the fire.

San Juan fire Chief Tirso Garza said it took nearly an hour and a half to put out the fire, and the Pharr Fire Department also assisted.

Hernandez says her two pitbulls were pulled out of the home, but their English bulldog died of smoke inhalation.

“He was a whole character, so of course we will remember him with a smile and how happy he made us,” Hernandez said.

Although the majority of the family’s belongings were lost, they’re thankful to have each other.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

A GoFundMe was created to assist the family in their recovery.
