Risk of Wildfires Rise as Drought Conditions Worsen in the Valley

WESLACO – Drought conditions are getting worse in the Rio Grande Valley and much worse in counties just north of the region.
A map shows extreme drought conditions in red spreading in Webb, Zapata, Jim Hogg and Duval counties.
In the Valley, tan shades indicates a moderate drought in northwest Starr County and southern Hidalgo County.
The dry conditions also create ideal conditions for wildfires.
The two closest big fires in South Texas affected Brooks County this week.
Meanwhile, what they're calling the "sing fire" in Brooks County is still burning, affecting 700 acres.
As dry conditions continue in all nearby counties, the U.S. Forest Service is warning people to take extreme precautions with farm equipment, idling vehicles over grass, burning debris or anything else that could spark a fire.
