Residents Want City to Finish Installing Speed Limit Signs

LA FERIA – Several residents are asking La Feria city officials to install speed limit signs on their streets.

South Texas Haven resident Rod Royale wants drivers to slow down in his neighborhood.

“People come in here and go out way too fast the way it is,” he said.

Royale lives on Parker Road, a dead end. He and others said they want the city to finish what they started.

Royale said two poles were installed for the speed signs a year ago.

“It was brought up to get 10 to 15 mile an hour speed limit. Well, then they found out that they couldn’t, they’d have to be a 30 mile and hour because it’s a city street,” he said.

He said a 30 mile per hour speed limit will not make their street safer as they were hoping for.

“We’re all elderly people. There’s a woman down there at the end. I think she’s close to 90, and somebody coming down through here at 30 miles per hour, she starts backing up and don’t see it, there’s going to be wreck,” he said.

La Feria city manager Jaime Sandoval said there is a city-wide ordinance on speed limits around town.

Chapter 12 of the Traffic and Vehicle ordinance reads in part:

“No automobile shall be driven or propelled along the streets, alleys or other public places of the city at a greater speed than 30 miles per hour, unless specifically posted otherwise.”

Royale said the poles have been in place without a sign for nearly a year. But they were installed before Sandoval took over as city manager.

Sandoval said he’s not sure why the lower speed limits haven’t been granted. He said he will be looking into the issue.
