LAGUNA MADRE - A manatee was spotted off the jetties at South Padre Island, nearly 1,000 miles from where the species is best known to roam.
The search is underway for the marine mammal that somehow made its way along Padre Island.
The first photos came out Wednesday and then additional sightings off the jetties at South of the Island.
To see it again would help researchers better understand what it's doing at the island.
Biologist Shelby Besette says the recent storm in the Gulf could have played a factor.
"Anytime there's a tropical storm in the Gulf it can throw an animal off course. So maybe the manatee was avoiding it and went off to South Padre", explains Besette.
