Progreso mayor to stay in federal custody, faces drug trafficking charges

Progreso Mayor Gerardo Alanis will remain in federal custody as he faces drug trafficking charges.
Alanis went before a federal judge on Tuesday, where he was ordered to be held without a bond until his arraignment, set for Thursday.

Federal court records show Alanis is facing one count of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute cocaine, and two counts of possession with intent to distribute.
Alanis is one of eight defendants in a drug trafficking investigation that also netted the arrest of his brother — Progreso Assistant City Manager Francisco Javier Alanis.
Francisco was arrested in October 2023 and accused of being involved in a drug trafficking scheme from January 2020 to March 2022.

Francisco is set to appear in court on April 30.
Progreso City Attorney Javier Villalobos says despite being in the custody of U.S. Marshals, Alanis is still serving as mayor until he is proven guilty.
