WESLACO – Analysts with an Austin-based intelligence group said the wall may be built south the of U.S.-Mexico border.

President Donald Trump continuously highlighted the construction of a border wall at the U.S. border in his campaign.

Stratfor Latin American Analyst Reggie Thompson said implementing extra security or even building a wall between the Mexico and Guatemala is a possibility.

Citing La Politica Online, Thompson described the alternative policy option is a more justifiable economic option. Increased security on Mexico’s southern border with Guatemala is a persistent feature of Mexican and U.S. efforts. He said it helps with the flow of migrants.

Two years ago, the U.S. and Mexico joint efforts to implemented additional security on the Mexico-Guatemalan border to aid the overwhelming number of unaccompanied minors making their way north.

“This is another option that is potentially something that we could start seeing coming out,” he said. “Particularly because it could potentially turn into just a strengthening of effort of Mexico and the U.S. are already carrying out on that part of the border.”

President Trump and Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto are expected to meet later on January. Thompson said the main focus of the reunion will likely be about NAFTA and immigration.

The Stratfor analyst said he wouldn’t be surprised if a border on the southern part of Mexico is a topic of discussion at the meeting.
