Some Valley school districts are already focusing on what food to serve to students in the next school year.
More than 100 booths were set up at the Region One ESC School Nutrition Expo, a showcase for food vendors where school districts could choose what food could possibly serve to their students.
Students in attendance served as taste testers.
Region One had a survey at each booth that allowed students the chance to share how they felt about the food they tested.
The survey results will be sent to school districts, according to Region One Purchasing Cooperative Specialist Kristina Escobar.
“From there, each school district individually will decide, ‘OK, students really like this one, let's test it a little further, see what they like,’ and hopefully put it on their menu for the upcoming school year," Escobar said.
This year's expo also had Rio Hondo graduate and former NFL Chicago Bears player Roberto Garza as a special guest.
Garza spoke with students on the importance of nutrition.
“It's been a while since I've been home, but I'm fortunate that this event is here to come back and talk to the kids about eating correctly, eating the right foods, so they can get the best out of their bodies so they can move and learn,” Garza said.
