Non-profit groups in Matamoros, located in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas, are getting ready to open a new shelter to relocate the current migrant camp along the banks of the Rio Grande.
Matamoros city officials said the camp currently has more than 800 people, a decrease from the 3,000 migrants reported last month.
Within a few weeks, officials from Catholic Charities and the Diocese of Matamoros will invite migrants to move to a former hospital building whose parking lot has already been transformed into a new shelter.
The new shelter is equipped with bathrooms, showers and large tents.
An official opening date for the shelter has yet to be announced.
