McAllen ISD is hoping to spread more knowledge on sign language and deaf culture.

The district's third Annual DeafWorld event is set for Friday, Sept. 27 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at McAllen ISD’s Brown Middle School gym — located at 2700 S. Ware Rd.

The event is being organized by the district’s Regional Day School for the Deaf Program, and aims to introduce sign language.

Organizers will also offer resources and talk about career opportunities within the deaf community.

“I want them to just understand and know the exposure and how important it is to not only learn sign or know sign language — or know how to communicate — but it's important for them to know culture-wise, the social interaction of them,” Idalia Salazar, instructional strategist for the Regional Day School for the Deaf Program, said. “There's nothing like showing up in person and knowing what to do.”

The event is free and open to the public.
