Local organization highlights need for broadband internet access

With Senate Bill 5 becoming law, the Rio Grande Valley could be getting more access to broadband internet.
The local non-profit La Union del Pueblo Entero advocates for internet access in colonias, saying the need for it grew with kids learning virtually last year.
Maria Flores says the high cost for internet service is a bill she's willing to pay so her kids can learn. But she says the connection is so bad, her kids aren't getting a fair shot at school.
State Rep. Armando Martinez said that under SB5, a State Broadband Development Office - with 11 board members appointed by the Governor - will have one year to draw up a map of which areas are going to get broadband.
"We want to make sure that we have people from the Valley that are representing Texas on this board,” Rep. Martinez said.
The bill will provide grants, and low-interest loans to provide internet in rural areas.
