WESLACO – A fatal accident temporarily shut down part of the expressway in Weslaco this morning.
Weslaco police said an 18-wheeler struck a 100-year-old woman around 4:15 a.m. It happened on the eastbound lanes just before the Texas Boulevard exit. The lanes were closed between Westgate Drive and Texas Boulevard. They reopened shortly before 7 a.m.
Officers told CHANNEL 5 NEWS the victim, Guadalupe Cervantes, died at the scene. According to police, the driver stopped to render aid and is not facing any criminal charges.
They’re trying to find out why Cervantes was walking on the expressway at the time of the accident.
