Congressman Vicente Gonzalez is calling on U.S. Customs and Border Protection to take action in response to reports of long wait times at multiple ports of entry in Brownsville, according to a news release.

In a letter sent to CBP acting Commissioner Troy A. Miller, Gonzalez said there have been multiple reports of several lane closures at the Gateway International Bridge, causing hours of traffic delays.

“According to Cameron County [80%] of pedestrian traffic in Brownsville is facilitated by the Gateway Bridge, making any delays severely impactful to trade and travel,” Gonzalez stated.

The Veterans International Bridge at Los Tomates, the Free Trade International Bridge at Los Indios and the Brownsville & Matamoros International Bridge have also reportedly experienced recent wait times of up to six hours with limited lanes open, Gonzalez said.

The bridge in Los Indios accounts for more than $10.5 billion in cross-border commerce annually, the letter stated.

“Not only do these excessive wait times affect trade and travel time, but also the health and well-being of travelers, including children, families, and the elderly, who are unable to use restrooms or stop for water and food,” the letter stated. “Additionally, long wait times in excessive heat have caused multiple vehicles to stall, overheat, or damage tires, which endangers passengers and requires costly repairs.”

Channel 5 News reached out to CBP for comment, but did not hear back before this story aired.
