KRGV TV Channel 5 News (ABC) in the McAllen-Weslaco-Brownsville market is looking for a dynamic Assistant Chief Engineer to join the largest news operation in South Texas.
The Assistant Chief Engineer will assist the Chief Engineer in overseeing all technical operations within the television station’s broadcasting facilities. This includes managing broadcast systems, equipment, and maintenance activities, while ensuring high-quality programming and efficient operation of broadcast infrastructure. The role requires strong technical knowledge, excellent problem-solving skills, and the ability to work under pressure in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
This is a Full-Time position
Reports To: Chief Engineer
Responsibilities:
· Technical Support: Assist the Chief Engineer in the maintenance and operation of all broadcast systems, including transmission equipment, servers, routers, and signal processors.
· Equipment Maintenance & Troubleshooting: Perform routine inspections, troubleshooting, and repairs of broadcast equipment to minimize downtime and ensure optimal performance.
· System Monitoring: Monitor live feeds, audio/video quality, and signal integrity to ensure broadcast standards are met. Respond quickly to technical issues during live broadcasts to minimize disruptions.
· Facility Oversight: Help oversee the maintenance of control rooms, studio equipment, transmission systems, and auxiliary broadcast systems to ensure continuous operations.
· Technical Documentation: Assist with the development and maintenance of technical documentation, including schematics, operating procedures, and equipment inventories.
· Compliance & Safety: Ensure that all broadcast equipment and operations comply with local, state, and federal regulations, including safety protocols and technical standards.
· Collaboration & Communication: Work closely with the engineering team, production staff, and other departments to ensure seamless coordination and the successful delivery of content.
· Training & Development: Provide guidance and training to junior engineers, technical staff, and operators on equipment operation, safety practices, and troubleshooting techniques.
· Project Management: Assist with engineering projects, such as system upgrades, installations, and new technology integration, ensuring project timelines and budgets are met.
· Emergency Response: Respond to and resolve technical emergencies during live broadcasts or recording sessions, ensuring minimal disruption and quick restoration of service.
Requirements:
· Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electronics, Broadcast Engineering, Telecommunications, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
· Experience : 5+ years of experience in broadcast engineering or a related technical field, including hands-on experience with broadcast transmission systems, control room operations, and equipment maintenance
· Technical Expertise: Knowledge of broadcast technologies, including SDI, IP-based systems, signal routing, transmission equipment, and automation systems. Familiarity with editing software, video servers, and network management is a plus.
· Problem-Solving Skills: Strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to perform under pressure, especially in live broadcast environments.
· Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to coordinate with team members and other departments effectively.
· Attention to Detail: High level of attention to detail in maintaining equipment, monitoring system health, and performing regular audits and checks.
· Certifications: Certifications such as SBE (Society of Broadcast Engineers) or CTS (Certified Technology Specialist) are a plus.
Working Conditions:
· Ability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as required by broadcast schedules.
· Ability to respond to technical emergencies or equipment failures, which may require on-call availability.
· Physical stamina to lift heavy equipment, work in confined spaces, and perform equipment maintenance tasks.
