Witnesses testifying in Victor Godinez trial detail tense manhunt for suspect
More witnesses took to the stand Thursday on the fourth day of the trial against Victor Godinez.
Godinez is charged in the death of Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Moises Sanchez, who prosecutors say died in August 2019 after Godinez shot him four months earlier.
Godinez also faces two counts of attempted capital murder of a peace officer.
Sanchez was responding to a crash near 10th Street and Freddy Gonzalez Drive in April 2019 that Godinez is accused of fleeing from prior to the shooting.
Edinburg police Sgt. Sandra Tapia said she took fire during a second shooting incident in that 2019 manhunt.
Tapia also told jurors about the tense situation at the Cordon's Taste of Chicago restaurant, located near where Trooper Sanchez was shot that night.
Tapia said it was a packed house inside the restaurant, and she was assigned to move children and families to a safe relocation point outside the police perimeter.
Restaurant owner Edgar Cordon said about 300 people were there that night.
Retired DPS Trooper Eugenio Garcia Jr. was also at the scene.
Garcia’s testimony described the moments leading up to Godinez’s capture.
He told jurors he expected to be shot prior to apprehending Godinez.
