The three police officers were hospitalized in stable condition.

During the arraignment, Ayala was seen smiling, and shouted expletives at the people in the room.

According to Sifuentes, Ayala's mother called police to report he was assaulting her. When police arrived, they tried to remove Ayala from the home but he "slipped out of their grip" and grabbed a kitchen knife to stab the officers.

Channel 5 News was told this was not the first time San Juan police officers responded to that same residence.

Police were previously there for a drug-related call. Sifuentes said prior to the stabbing, Ayala was accused of trying to steal a car with another knife earlier that day.
