LAREDO – The program that sends immigrants back to Mexico to wait to see if they'll be let into the U.S. is now in Laredo.
They're asylum seekers and there's now a new facility set up to help process their case.
In Downtown Laredo, in the middle commerce where foot traffic is high, the government is setting up a facility as it expands a new immigrant screening program.
The new building is the main staging area here for the Migrant Protection Protocols; the facility is not a detention center.
Migrants will pass through security checks.
They'll also be subject to a medical check before processing.
Staff will be checking the immigrant's identity with Customs and Border Protection databases.
