EDINBURG – Rio Grande Valley doctors and medical personnel are on their way to Puerto Rico to assist in ongoing hurricane recovery efforts.

Doctors affiliated with Doctors Hospital at Renaissance teamed up with a local Mission group called Heal International Medical Missions.

Teams of 15 will go to Puerto Rico for one week each and volunteer at a hospital there.

Dr. Alison Garza is one of the volunteer doctors. She’s collected supplies at Family First Medical Center in Edinburg.

“The latest reports that we heard last were still over 80 percent of the island did not have electricity or drinkable water, and we really just don’t know what we’re going to encounter once we get over there,” she said.

Groups will head to the island for the next five weeks.

If you want to help, they are taking donations of hygiene products, batteries, flashlights, diapers and medical supplies at Family First Medical Center located at located at 2046 S McColl Road in Edinburg.
